Understanding the difference between terrorism and resistance is key to tackling the root cause of threats to international security and peace, a senior Qatari official has said, according to QNA.

Speaking to the UN Security Council in New York this week, Qatar’s permanent representative to the UN Ambassador Alia bint Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani added that establishing social justice for people growing up in violent environments is one way to ward off radicalization.

This is because extremist groups often claim they are defending the rights of the people.

Al-Thani did not appear to go into specifics, and added that Qatar “condemns terrorism and violence regardless of its causes and motivations.”

But she also emphasized that the world can only counter growing terrorism threats by “tackling the political, economic and social roots of the matter.”

Al-Thani’s comments echo remarks made by other Qatari leaders in recent years.

In February 2015, for example, the Emir argued that “bullets and bombs” were not enough to win the war on extremism. He added that hopelessness, not Islam, were among the root causes of terrorism.

Thoughts?
