From art and fashion exhibitions to film screenings and a charity drive, there’s a lot to do in Qatar this weekend.

Here are some of our picks:

Fire Station: Artists in Residence Exhibition

After an intensive nine-month program, the 2015/2016 batch of Fire Station’s Artists in Residence will be showcasing their artwork.

The opening in on Thursday, June 2 at 7pm, and is meant to give the artists an opportunity to engage with professionals in the field, as well as initiate discussion on art with the wider public.

The exhibition will run from June 3 till November 2016 at the Fire Station.

“Masters of Illusion” film screenings

Doha Film Institute will be screening seven films over the next few days under the theme “Masters of Illusion.”

The special 5-day program at Katara Drama Theatre is meant to explore the importance of visual perceptions and illusions in filmmaking, how celebrated filmmakers used them, and how they allow for a sensory experience.

Some of the films being screened include The Matrix, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Prestige, and Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.

The event will run from Wednesday, June 1 to Sunday, June 5. Individual tickets cost QR35 while a whole package ticket costs QR100. These can be bought online or on the day of the event. For timings of individual screenings, check out DFI’s website.

DFI will also host a free public lecture on the subject by Teresa Cavina, an Italian festival programmer and artistic director, on June 3, 2:30pm at the Katara Drama Theatre.

InterNations 3rd ‘Drive for Good’

Join InterNations Volunteer Group in Doha on their 3rd Drive for Good by donating items such as clothes, food, personal hygiene products, sports gear, and more for Qatar’s blue-collar workers.

People are welcome to droff off the items in advance, or join the group for the drive as they deliver the items.

The drive will be at the Shihaniya migrant worker camp, which houses roughly 21,000 people. The group will meet there at 3:30pm on Saturday, June 4.

QMA’s End of Year Ceremony 2015

Enjoy the concerts of Qatar Music Academy’s students as they showcase Arab and Western musical ensembles at their End of Year Ceremony.

Held at the Qatar National Convention Center’s Auditorium 3, the event will start at 4pm on Saturday, June 4. The event is free of charge and visitors will be offered light refreshments.

The 9th edition of the Heya Arabian Fashion Exhibition will kick off on Thursday, June 2 and run till Monday, June 6.

The event, considered Qatar’s most popular exhibition of abayas and traditional Arabic attire, will host Gulf-based designers as they show off their abaya, kaftan, jalabiya, veil and gown designs. Accessories, belts, bags and shoes are also on offer.

Visitors can enjoy daily fashion shows or learn from workshops hosted by industry experts.

The exhibition will run from 10am to 10pm at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center. For more information, visit Heya’s website.

Exhibition and Workshop: What About the Art?

Join Qatar Museums Gallery’s team as they give a guided family visit of their exhibition. Parents and children get to explore the exhibition together, followed by an art-making workshop where children can make their own clay sculptures.

The workshop will be held on Saturday, June 4 from 3pm to 5pm. While registration for the workshop is free, participants are requested to register online beforehand. For more information, visit Qatar Museums’ website.

The 118th Philippine Independence Day celebrations host an all-day program of activities, including popular Filipino entertainers such as Enchong Dee, Andrea Torres, and Sam Concepcion.

The event will kick off on Friday, June 3 from 7am to 11pm at the Al Majlis Auditorium in Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel. Tickets cost QR5 and serve as raffle stubs to win prizes from the events’ sponsors and organizers.

  • Art workshop registration: Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art is offering a 4-day summer program for children aged 12 to 14. The program will focus on learning different techniques of mixed media art. It will run from June 27 to June 30. Those interested can now register on Mathaf’s website.
  • Kayaking: Discover Arabia and Muscular Dystrophy Qatar will be hosting a sunset paddling event at Al Thakira Mangroves reserve. The event will be followed by a karaoke night and a talk by Nawaal Akram. While equipment will be available, people are encouraged to bring their own food for the barbeque. The event will start at 5pm till 8:30pm on Saturday, June 4. Tickets cost QR250 and are available for only 60 people due to limited kayaks.
