Qatar Paralympic silver medal winner Abdelrahman Abdelqader
Team Qatar’s Abdelrahman Abdelqader has won the country’s first medal at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio De Janeiro.
The tournament is held every four years for athletes with physical disabilities, including mobility issues, blindness and amputations.
Yesterday, Abdelqader took silver after achieving 11.15m on his sixth attempt in the shotput F34 final, his seasonal best.
He beat out Valencia Mauricio of Colombia, who took bronze with 11.10m, but lost to Morocco’s Nouri Azzeddine, who achieved 11.28m.
Athletes in the F34 category generally have moderate to severe problems in their lower limbs and use wheelchairs for daily activities, according to official Paralympic classifications.
National team
Qatar first began competing in the Paralympic Games in Atlanta in 1996. This year, three of its athletes are participating in four athletics events.
Abdelqader, who just turned 28, will also compete in the javelin throw – F34 final on Thursday, Sept. 15.
The other members of Team Qatar are Sara Hamdi Masoud, a 30-year-old who will compete in the Women’s Shot Put – F33 final on Friday; and Mohammed Rashid Al-Kubaisi.
The 23-year-old came in fourth after achieving a personal best during heat 2 of the Men’s 100m – T34 yesterday. He will compete in the finals on Tuesday.
