Fuel prices in Qatar will go up 5 to 10 dirhams per liter starting tomorrow, Dec. 1, the Ministry of Energy and Industry has announced.

The cost of one liter of 91-octane, premium grade petrol will be QR1.45, up from QR1.35/liter currently.

And super (95-octane) gasoline will cost QR1.50/liter, up from QR1.45/liter.

Diesel will remain steady at QR1.40.

The December prices reflect a 50 percent increase since January in the higher-grade option, and a 71 percent jump in the lower grade fuel option.

Ever higher

This is the second month in a row that the cost of filling up has increased, and the new prices represent the highest they’ve been all year.

Qatar’s energy ministry first announced plans to fluctuate monthly fuel prices based on the global market in April.

A few months before that, it raised fuel prices by more than 30 percent for the first time in five years.

Before the increase in mid-January, Super (97-octane) cost QR1/liter, and Premium (90-octane) was only QR0.85/liter.

Also this year, Qatar phased out 97-octane fuel.

At the time, Woqod said many vehicles don’t actually require that type of petrol and using it could be considered a waste of money and energy.

However, some residents countered that it’s also not cost-effective to pay the same price or more for lower-quality fuel.

Thoughts?
